Sweeping as play?

With a home office it's all too evident that right now I'm working all day while my kids are playing. But I don't have to settle for a "poor me, look at me slaving away" attitude about the things I'm doing. I'm reminded about Ellen Langer of Harvard University and her study of mindfulness vs. mindlessness. Today I'd like to revisit some of her ideas about work vs. play. When your young child is at play he or she is in the moment - thinking in ways that, for example, enable a cardboard box to…See More

Practical reasons for values-based leadership

There are some hold-out leaders who still haven't formally articulated a values-based guidance system for their companies. Some haven't because they don't think they are big enough yet, some because their focus is completely on profitability (however they have to get there,) and some because the whole values thing feels too squishy and new-agey.It's interesting to me that the vast majority of performance concerns come down, though, to values-based conflicts:Is it more important to be on time or…See More

Who will be your next teacher?

If you have truly committed to the concept of life-long learning, of continuing to sharpen the saw - where are you going to look for your next teacher? Will you be getting your information from books, online, or have you considered making contact with live role models and/or instructors? We could talk about life-long learning in general terms, but you know as well as I do that nothing significant in the way of progress happens until you get more specific. Do you have an idea about a path you…See More

You can change behavior when you make it fun

Remember back when the legendary Mary Poppins said "You find the fun and - snap! The job's a game!"? Have you forgotten her message in the crush of deadlines or pressures, whether at work or at home?A group of scientists decided to test the fun theory to see whether they could inspire more people to choose to take the stairs rather than the escalator. Watch:"The Dreaded Stairs"Before the experiment, 97% of people were using the…See More

Coming Soon - Leaders Cafe 2020

Dozens of leadership and management gurus talk about the importance of continuous improvement, of "sharpening the saw" to make sure your skills are current and in tip-top shape. Yet there are a number of obstacles that prevent some current and aspiring leaders from doing that:Lack of timeLack of money to invest in classesLack of support on the part of the company to pursue leadership development training on their ownLack of interest in reading booksDifficulty transferring read information into…See More

Time and space for breathing, thinking

Photo by Julie Poland 6-1-09Have you been stuck on the treadmill, rushing madly from activity to activity, from task to task? There is no doubt that there are certain times in one's life where this mode is common - when just out of school, juggling between making a career and finding social outlets; when kids are in activity mode and you're the taxi driver; when you're starting a business…See More

Let your yes mean yes and your no, no

Every kid worth his or her salt knows that a parent's "no" is only as strong as the mom or dad's willingness to follow-through to enforce it. Sometimes the word no really means "OK, but only if I don't catch you," or even "I'm worn out from the day today and I can't think about it right now," or "no is my default position until you whine and wheedle long enough that I'll cave." One of the important lessons parents teach children (especially daughters,) is that "no means no!" and they expect the…See More

At what point do you resort to firing someone?

In general terms more employeers hire too fast and fire too slowly than do the opposite.  In the urgency to have an open slot filled they settle for a less-than-ideal candidate.  Then downstream they invest extra time trying to bring that person's performance up to par.  At what point is enough, enough?  Unless an employee commits some egregious foul, how do you determine when it's time to cut the cord?  And how hard do you work (what steps do you take) to help them perform before you help them…See More

The role of alignment in customer loyalty

It's easy for business owners and managers to make some assumptions about why customers are or are not being satisfied when they make contact with the company. These assumptions include:If only my people would be better they would treat the customers better.Customers don't know what they want (and other "blame the customer") variations. There's more to be done than to ensure that employees know how to behave at every point of customer connection, and to have them feel motivated to do it…See More

The seven wastes are hiding in plain sight...

When you're trying to be green, or to squeeze every available dollar of profit out of your revenue, you're missing opportunity for cost savings if you're not looking at the seven types of waste. It's often not going to be as obvious as haybale-sized chunks of refuse, but it's having a detrimental impact on your business.Producing defects - If you're a manufacturer and you're reworking or repairing parts, you're incurring this cost. Even adminstrative or business processes incur this cost in the…See More

From my own perspective it's about having a process and providing the climate. Process includes such things as an agenda, preferably in advance, an understanding by all participants of the purpose of the meeting, and multiple communication…

Is your business seasonal?

Is your business seasonal? What creates the seasonality? Are there weather conditions, special events and/or holidays that affect it? How do you feel about the fact that a chunk of your business happens in one or two parts of the year? One question that owners forget to ask is “In what ways might we contributing to the roller coaster cash flow in our business?” I’ve observed that business owners and sales staffs contribute to their own seasonality in these ways:Assumptions (accurate or not)…See More
